The Sumpango Giant Kite Festival is an extraordinary celebration that combines vibrant culture, artistry, and tradition. Taking place annually on 1st November for Dia de Todos los Santos (All Saint's Day) this festival draws visitors from around the globe. If you're planning to attend this year's festival, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your experience!
A Rich History
The Sumpango Giant Kite Festival has deep roots, dating back to the early 20th century. Originally, the tradition began as a way to honour deceased loved ones. The colourful designs and messages on the kites serve as tributes and reminders of those who have passed.
Fascinating Facts:
Whilst the tradition dates back several decades, the festival itself was first held in 1978, this year is the 46th edition of the festival.
The kites symbolise the connection between the underworld and those still on earth, which is why they have become associated with honouring the dead on this particular day.
The kites are made only of paper, glue and bamboo and can measure up to 20 feet in diameter, making for a breathtaking sight.
The Competitive Spirit
The Sumpango Kite Festival is not just about display; there’s a competitive edge as well! Kite makers and teams compete for various categories, showcasing their creativity, craftsmanship, and the stories behind their kites. The excitement in the air as kites soar high above is palpable, making it an unforgettable spectacle.
When to go?
Arriving early gives you the chance to beat most of the local crowds and to witness the incredible process of kite building, seeing these masterpieces come to life before they are launched is a truly unique experience. You might even catch traditional Mayan ceremonies performed in honour of the festival - these rituals are meant to honour ancestors and invoke blessings for the coming year, adding a profound spiritual element to the day.
We recommend the morning for families, as the afternoon hosts more of a 'party' atmosphere with larger crowds, however you will be guaranteed to see more of the kites actually flying the later you go in the day, and also hear the results of the competition which is generally announced around 3pm.
What to Bring
To ensure a fantastic day at the festival, be sure to come prepared. Here’s a quick checklist:
Sunscreen/a light jacket: The festival is held in a field with limited shade so make sure to protect yourself from the elements as the weather can be unpredictable.
Cash: The event operates on a cash-only basis, so make sure you bring enough for food, drinks, and souvenirs. ATM access is not guaranteed.
Water: While refreshments are available, we recommend keeping a water bottle with you throughout the day.
Decent Shoes: Wear comfortable footwear for the uneven ground, which can get dusty or muddy, depending on the weather.
Camera: Make sure you capture the stunning kites and lively atmosphere—this is a memory you’ll want to keep!
Must-Try Food and Drink
No festival experience is complete without sampling local cuisine! If you haven't yet tried these in Guatemala, the festival is a great time to try:
Churrasquito: You'll no doubt smell the delicious grilled meat and veggies before you see it! It's a firm Guatemalan favourite for any occasion but definitely a great festival treat!
Tamales: These traditional Guatemalan dishes are a festival staple, made from corn dough and filled with delicious ingredients.
Atol de Elote: A warm corn drink that’s sweet and comforting, perfect for the festive atmosphere.
Micheladas: A refreshing drink made with beer, lime juice, tomato juice and various sauces (like Worcestershire and hot sauce).
Top Tip: The most traditional Guatemalan dish for All Saint's day is fiambre - a cold dish featuring a mix of cold cuts, cheeses, and various vegetables, all dressed in a tangy vinegar-based sauce. This is typically prepared in large quantities and eaten as a family dinner, so while you may not be able to find it at the festival, we recommend trying some when you're back in town!
Entertainment and Vendors
In addition to the breathtaking kites, the festival offers a lively atmosphere with live marimba music and other local artists, creating an enchanting backdrop for the festivities. As you wander through the festival grounds, you’ll find numerous vendors selling handcrafted goods, textiles, and souvenirs, allowing you to take a piece of Guatemala home with you.
Practical Information
Bathroom Access: Be aware that there may be a small fee (around 5 quetzales) to use the bathrooms, so plan accordingly. We also recommend bringing your own tissues just in case!
Medical Tent: A medical tent will be available on-site for any emergencies.
Children: Whilst children are welcome at the festival, we advise parents to keep an eye on them at all times due to crowds. There is a tannoy system to help locate lost children in an emergency.
Accessibility: Please note that this festival is held in an open outdoor space with uneven ground and limited seating, and can draw large crowds. It is therefore unsuitable for wheelchair users, those with mobility problems or pushchairs/strollers.
